THIS?
Hi — I'm Vince Gonzalez, and OpticQuiz is a one-person project with one goal: to be the home of free online vision testing — the honest one. I build browser tools, and this site exists because I got curious about which online vision tests were real and which were theater. The answer bothered me enough to build the honest version.
THE HONESTY POLICY
Every test on this site states exactly what a screen can and cannot measure. No invented precision, no fake confidence percentages, no diagnosis cosplay.
Concretely, that means: the color plates are generated fresh from real confusion-axis colorimetry instead of scraped images; scoring is transparent counts and thresholds you can see, not black-box "AI analysis"; and where a screen genuinely can't do something — separate protanopia from deuteranopia, measure flicker beyond half your refresh rate, produce a prescription — the test says so, on the page, in plain language.
WHAT THESE TESTS ARE
Educational screening and honest curiosity tools. Some map to real clinical procedures (the tumbling-E chart, the Amsler grid, the D-15 arrangement, the Rayleigh anomaloscope match); others measure genuine perceptual thresholds that are simply interesting (flicker fusion, vernier hyperacuity, your blind spot). All of them run entirely in your browser — no account, and your test answers and scores are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
One honest footnote so this claim stays true: the site itself uses Google Analytics and Google AdSense, which — like most of the web — set cookies and see standard visit data (page, device, rough location). Some guide pages also carry Amazon affiliate links, so a purchase there may earn the site a small commission at no extra cost to you — and only for things with real evidence behind them (never blue-light glasses, for instance). None of that touches the test pages, and all of it is separate from your test results, which are computed on your device and never sent to me or anyone else. If you'd rather block even the analytics, any content blocker or private window handles it.
WHAT THEY ARE NOT
- Not a diagnosis. A consumer screen has unknown brightness, gamma, and color calibration. Real diagnostics use controlled instruments.
- Not a substitute for an eye exam. If any result here worries you — or your vision has changed — book an optometrist or ophthalmologist. That's the correct move every time.
- Not for medical, employment, or safety decisions. Occupational color-vision and acuity requirements are tested clinically, full stop.
HOW THE TESTS ARE BUILT
Each test is a single self-contained page: the stimuli are drawn procedurally (canvas or SVG), the psychophysics use standard methods — adaptive staircases, forced-choice trials, level ladders — and every scoring rule is readable in the page source. The whole site is open to inspection on GitHub; found a bug or a dishonest claim, open an issue and I'll fix it.
PUBLISHED & PEER-VERIFIABLE
The method behind the color test isn't just open source — it's published open-access. The procedural plate-generation technique, and an honest account of exactly where it breaks (uncalibrated screens, sRGB limits, observer metamerism), are written up as a preprint with a permanent DOI, released under CC BY 4.0, with the source code deposited alongside it. Most online vision tests won't tell you how they work; this one hands you the paper.
